Zach Ferkins - Canoe Racing
Zach is a part of the New Zealand High Performance Squad based at Lake Karapiro. He has raced for New Zealand at Under 18, Under 23 and Open Level. He is currently looking to qualify for the Paris Olympics in the K4 500 metre race which will be held at this year's Open World Championships in Germany.
Jaxson Russell - Cycling
Jaxson recently completed his studies at Cambridge High School and is now working part-time to fund his cycling career. Jaxson has a variety of skills on the track seeing him win a number of National titles and Junior World Championship medals. Being his first year as an elite track cyclist, Jaxson is hoping to reach new heights at a National level and at the Oceania Championships. He is also training hard to make the step-up into the New Zealand High Performance Program.
Halle Scurrah - Hockey
Halle is studying to complete a Bachelor of Health, Sport and Human Performance with a minor in Māori and Indigenous Studies. Halle has been a part of many regional competitions and teams as well as participating in numerous New Zealand events and camps. She hopes to inspire young athletes through her coaching and playing style.
Ben McCallum - Canoe Racing
Ben is in the New Zealand Men's High Performance Team based in Cambridge. He is working towards the K1 1000 metre selection for Canoe Sprint World Championships at Nationals in April, where he will be defending his title. Later this year, Ben will also be working to secure his spot at Ocean Ski World Championships held in Perth.
Elias Lepou - Basketball
Elias is one of the best point guards in the Waikato. In the 2022 Under 17 Nationals, Elias was named as one of the Top 10 players in the tournament. Last year, Elias helped Hamilton Boys High win the Super 8 Basketball Tournament for only the second time in their history. Elias has chosen to play his senior year at St John’s this year as he pursues his goal to obtain a scholarship in the United States next year.
Akiva McBirney-Griffin - Basketball
After playing age group representative basketball for Waikato and New Zealand, Akiva had two seasons with NBL team Otago Nuggets before heading to America on a basketball scholarship. He is currently a redshirt freshman at the University of California Irvine. He is thriving in the competitive Division 1 Big West conference and fine tuning his skills on court. He is studying towards a Bachelor of Social Ecology majoring in Psychology. He wants to inspire young ballers of Pacific decent, that if you do the mahi, you get the treats.
Rebecca Petch - BMX
Rebecca started racing when she was 3 years old when her parents got her a bike and the rest is history! She is resilient and powerful and has numerous podium finishes and championships to her name. Rebecca has competed internationally at World Championships around the globe in the USA, Belgium and Azerbaijan, Rebecca is hoping to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Sarah Walker - BMX
Sarah is a multiple BMX World Champion and an Olympic medallist. Sarah helped put BMX on the map for New Zealand, paving the way for her team mates. Sarah is part of an incredibly strong BMX team - all vying for a Tokyo Olympic spot.
Junior De Young - Basketball
Up and coming basketballer currently attending Te Aroha College. Junior has also represented at a regional level, and NZ age group rep. Junior's long term goal would be to gain a full basketball scholarship in the USA while combining with a health degree. Junior has also helped out coaching and refereeing at a junior level.
Charli Miller - Triathlete, Track and Field
Charli is a very talented distance runner, both in NZSS Cross Country Champion and Middle Distance Track and Field. Charli has also won and broken records at Oceania Championships in the 1500m and 2km steeplechase. Before the track season came to a halt in March 2020 she won the Senior Women's 5000m at the NZ Championships and ran a personal best time in the 1500m that would have seen her qualify for the IAFF World Junior Track and Field Championships. Charli is also the NZSS U19 Triathlon Champion, a sport she utilises for cross training. Charli's ultimate goal is to compete at World U20, Senior Track and/or Cross Country Championships and the Olympics. Her recent results show she is tracking in the right direction.
Charlisse Leger-Walker - Basketball
Charlisse is completing a Business and Environmental Science degree at Washington State University and playing for the university's Cougars team. Charlisse was named the 2020-21 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. She becomes the first Washington State women’s basketball player to earn the conference’s top freshman honour in 23 years. She hopes her journey will inspire other young female basketball players to continue to grow the sport in New Zealand.
Jessie Smith - BMX
Jessie is a member of the BMX National Performance Hub for talented young riders - this programme bridges the gap between school and high performance. Jessie is a talented rider and in 2019 she claimed the Junior World BMX Championship title and is now competing at elite level. She is hoping to qualify for the Olympics.
